Originating in Italy in the 1500s, pastels have been a mainstay in the art world ever since. In interior design, pastel colours began being used in the 1700s, with the Rococo style which was thought to be championed by Madame de Pompadour.

Their usage in art peaked in 1700s portraiture which coincided with the Rococo style, with primarily French artists leaning to pastels in this period. Pastels also saw a big revival in the 1900s.
