How to Measure Your Wall

It may sound obvious, but when ordering made-to-measure you will need the correct measurements! For some people with experience this may be simple, but to the layman there may be a few questions. We have written this blog to answer all your questions so that you can get the perfect dimensions every time!

Here at WallpaperMural, we get lots of questions about specific walls as well as more general measuring advice. We will go through each of these to help you to know where to start and what to measure.

Check Your Units!

The first thing you need to do is check your units. On our website we accept either centimetres or inches, however you need to know which one to pick! Have a look at which units you are using on the tape measure, it should be labelled. As a general rule, normal wall heights range between 90-120 inches, or 230-300 centimetres.

What To Include

You should be measuring the entire surface which you wish to cover with wallpaper. You don't need to include skirting board or coving - unless you want to put wallpaper on them!

Rectangular Walls

Rectangular walls are the easiest to measure. Be aware that although your wall may look perfectly rectangular, it will not be!

To get your width measurement, simply extend the tape measure to the length of the wall horizontally, and read the number from the tape. To get the height, extend the tape measure to the length of the wall vertically, not including any areas not to be papered.

We recommend taking two measurements for the width (one at the top and one at the bottom) and picking the highest number. Similarly, measure the height at each side of the wall and pick the highest.

Non-Rectangular Walls

Non-rectangular walls are not quite as simple. When ordering your wallpaper, it is only able to be printed as a rectangle, so we need to find the tallest and widest points to ensure full coverage.

To get your width measurement, simply extend the tape measure to the length of the wall horizontally at the widest point and read the number from the tape. To get the height, extend the tape measure to the length of the wall vertically at the tallest point, not including any areas not to be papered.

If you are unsure which is the tallest and widest point, take a few measurements and use the highest.
